Rosacea (Rose-ay-shah), is a skin condition that plagues millions of people. It often targets women, but men tend to have worse symptoms. Treatment options are available, from dermatologist prescribed medications to appropriate lifestyle changes, to alternative remedies. Read on to find out more.
Tips
There are treatment options available. Please see the resources below.
Step1 SEE A DERMATOLOGIST FOR DIAGNOSIS:
Rosacea often starts so "innocently" that many people think they have sunburn, skin sensitivity, or are just easy to flush or blush.
In fact, the earlier symptoms of Rosacea are a feeling of burning, sensitivity, and flushing (reddening of the skin), and acne type pustules. The areas normally affected are the cheeks, chin, nose, and sometimes the forehead and eyes.
Rosacea is often mistaken for other skin conditions and tends to worsen without some type of intervention.
Step2 KNOW WHAT TO AVOID:
-Excess heat or sun exposure
-Excess cold weather conditions
-Alcohol consumption
-Hot, or spicy foods
-Stressful situations
-Hot showers
-Abrasive cleansing of the face
-Certain food sensitivities or allergies
Menopausal hot flashes can also be a precipitating factor in initiating worsening symptoms.
Step3 FIND OUT WHAT CAN HELP:
***ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT***
-topical ointments
-oral medication
-laser therapy treatment
***IF YOU MUST BE IN THE SUN***
-Wear a hat to reduce sun exposure
-Use a NATURAL SUNSCREEN. Most commercial products have chemicals that are irritants to sensitive skin conditions.
-Carry a small spray bottle of distilled water or a rose essential oil to spray on overheated facial skin. (Rose oil in distilled water, no additives such as alcohol.)
***OTHER OPTIONS***
-Consider a detox regimen. As with most skin conditions; "garbage inside" means "garbage outside".
-Take up yoga, tai chi, meditation, massage treatment...anything that will keep your stress levels low.
-Look into supplementing with flaxseed or borage oil.
-Find and try a high quality EMU OIL as a topical application. Ask at your local health food store or co-op.
-Check into the use of pure mineral makeup.
Step4 BE PROACTIVE IN YOUR ROSACEA MANAGEMENT:
Not only is it uncomfortable, but will worsen if left unchecked. Rosacea is also very hard on one's self esteem.
